Artist Bio

Mars Simpson is an interdisciplinary artist who focuses upon sculpture, painting, and drawing. His highly experimental and tentative process examines the polarity of life and the vastness of creativity. Each work seeks to embody the complexities of the states in the human mind, as well as its capacity to channel the outer and inner workings of life. He creates moments and conversations in each piece, connecting them through their differences, peculiarities, and enigmatic nature.

Mars resides as a student in South Carolina, at Winthrop University in the Department of Fine Arts. He is the curator and founder of the artist guild known as “Local Skeptics” and hosts many community based creative events. He is the Secretary and Co-Founder of the “Rising Artist of Winthrop”, a student born art club dedicated to building portfolios, social connections, and creative experiences within the student body. He has shown work in the college's galleries, as well as local galleries such as the Dalton Gallery, Bakhita Arts Center, and the Lewondowski Gallery.

His work attempts to capture moments, breaths, and changes and is constantly expanding and coalescing across the material landscape. Inspiration is found in the dancer's body, and the light on a herring's beak. Each moment, memory, thought, and appendage of life is all examined and played with, in a greater attempt to build relationships with the physical and meta-physical world. Sculptures and drawings are used as processes and dialogues, to deepen his relationship to the earth. They are moments to be challenged and learned from, fought over and submitted to, and ultimately played with.
